FAQs

Answers About The Program

Are the tools you provide your trainees evidence-based?

Yes! The facilitation skills we train are researched-based and proven to help increase knowledge and skills acquisition, retention, and recall among diverse groups.

What are the requirements to obtain the Certified Group Therapy Expert (CGTE) designation?

You must be a therapist or counselor in the fields of behavioral health or addiction treatment. This includes LMFTs, LCSWs, AODA Counselors, LAADAC Counselors, or any other relevant license or certification.

Does The Institute provide a curriculum for treatment centers to follow?

While CGTE Certification will provide skills training on building a session objective or plan from scratch, we do not provide a curriculum.  We help to enhance existing manuals so mental health professionals can use the content to effectively motivate and engage all the patients in the room.  A curriculum or manual is a framework, and what one does with that framework can make all the difference in the world to the patients in a group session.

How will the CGTE Certification help my groups become more inclusive?

Patients in group therapy are very diverse; they have different motivations, goals, learning preferences, processing speeds, background experience, levels of education, topic knowledge and social skill.  Some have been in treatment many times before while others are receiving help for the first time.  Reading to groups from a manual is not effective in meeting the needs of everyone in the room. Through our training, mental health professionals will learn the most effective ways to motivate and engage their groups, leading to maximum growth for their patients.

How will the CGTE Certification help reduce clinical turnover for my staff?

Through the evidence-based facilitation skills we provide, patient resistant behaviors decrease, and the overall increase in patient engagement results in a more enjoyable group experience for the patients and clinician.  In addition, investing in staff training has shown to be an effective tool for staff retention and other business benefits

Does the CGTE course provide CEUs?

Yes, you will get 10 NAADAC and BHAP-accredited CEUs upon completion of the course.

What does certification do for me?

Certification provides you with real-world skills and techniques to increase patient engagement and clinical outcomes in your group therapy sessions. Recognition through the use of the Certified Group Therapy Expert (CGTE) credential signifies you have a level of training and expertise which affords more advancement opportunities and higher salaries than your non-credentialed peers.

What does certification do for a treatment program?

Treatment programs will see increased patient engagement and satisfaction, leading to less resistance or problematic behavior in-program as well as an improved reputation outside the program. Higher levels of patient engagement have been shown to reduce AMAs and increase overall length of stay. Improved reputation leads to better word-of-mouth, improved online reviews, and increased referrals from alumni and community partners. Increased patient engagement and skill-building support improved clinical outcomes, which also lead to more referrals and even potentially improved contracts with insurance providers.

What's the cost for the Comprehensive Supervision Implementation?

Cost is dependent on staff size and number of facilities. Cost starts at $50,000 per year and goes up from there.
